As Pearl grew up in Hilo, she daily looked up from her kitchen and saw Mauna Kea. (While the above photo is from BigIsland-BigIsland.com, I've taken hundreds of similar shots, and the ones at sunrise can be spectacular. I'll later replace this one with my own.) Sometimes it was snowy, at times cloudy, but it was always memorable for her. Thus, it was an easy decision of her family to spread Pearl's ashes on Mauna Kea.
On 10August12 her family and friends gathered at her parent's home:
Our caravan drove through Saddle Road:
We made a right turn up towards the Mauna Kea Summit, but I chose to stop after about ten minutes, for I saw a bank of trees and a small parking area. Her family joined me in scattering her ashes:
I then went on to stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel (on the island map close to Puako), for that is where we spent our honeymoon when it first opened. At least, that is what I thought, but I note from that previous linkage something about 1965, and as the most expensive ever built. I could have sworn we went there in 1962, but, perhaps it was our second honeymoon. From my room I took two photos of Mauna Kea, showing the opposite side from Hilo:
They look the same, but, on afterthought, maybe one of them is Mount Hualalai.
NEXT: Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and Monette's.
