Four Season hotels are upscale and expensive. They are pretty much the top of the line, and those properties in Hualalai (Big Island) and Chiang Mai (Thailand) are two of my favorites. I stayed two nights at the Lodge in Koele (left, starts at $359/night) and will spend tonight at the Manele Bay Resort (below, starts at $459/night). The former is cool, with horses, while the latter is warm, with a beach. I'm here because Kamaainas (locals) get close to 30% off, with Koele offering $50/day to cover expenses. Plus, golf rates at both for me will be $85. The Challenge at Manele can cost as much as $225, while non-hotel guests pay $185 at the Experience at Koele. A monthly card at the Ala Wai Golf Course located just outside of Waikiki, which I have, provides ten 18-hole rounds for $85, if you walk.
The Lodge is a bit more posh compared to my previous stay when it was a Starwood hotel. The people working there are fabulous. Unfortunately, though, I can point out a few close to fatal flaws.
1. The water level in my toilet bowl was so high that when I sat....well, this is a delicate matter. Let me say that females don't have this problem. I developed a solution using towels, but am thinking about carrying with me one of those thingees you can inflate people place around their necks on airline flights, for I noticed Maui County and the State of Nevada also keep the level high.
2. My brunch was joined by at least six flies. These were large and larger. I had to wave one off every few seconds. This was most irritating and you got to wonder about the sanitation factors. I asked the waitress why there were flies, and she said they do everything from spraying chemicals to setting traps. A few fly swatters might help.
I finally got a clue as to why there are so many flies here, and the hotel is essentially doomed unless they choose to terminate all the large birds and animals in the area. There was crap all over the golf course. Large turdish ones and smaller round ones. If there is so much of this viewable, can you imagine how the woods must be? Where the crappers live. Certainly, now knowing where these flies are coming from, I don't want to eat at Koele anymore. No, I chose not to take any photos. But here is the tee off area on the 17th hole, where my drive traveled 260 yards down the middle.
The Experience was designed by Greg Norman and Ted Robinson. Sadly the pond in front of the finishing hole is a mess, and has been so for six months. Play is closed on Monday and Tuesday because play is so sparse. The experience was depressing.
The Challenge at Manele, designed by Jack Nicklaus (the 7000 yard tees have his name) is the better golf course. Here is a par 3:

I wore a Bear's Best t-shirt, which I purchased at the course he built in Las Vegas, comprised of his famous holes around the world. This one (in Las Vegas) is a public course, and tough. There were more players on the Challenge than the Experience, but one can get on just about at any time.
