- 11.3 million were affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan.
- Official death count of 1,744
- $15 billion estimated damages, which would be 5% of the gross domestic product--Hurricane Sandy last year cost $50 billion, 1% of the U.S. GDP.
- Up to 600 prisoners escaped.
As of 7PM Manila time on Tuesday, 12November2013:
- The estimated death toll for Tacloban City alone could be 10,000.
- The town of Gulan with a population of 40,000 is largely destroyed.
- Baco, a city of 35,000, is 80% under water.
- Most of the towns in the path of Haiyan suffered 80-90% damage.
- 630,000 are displaced, many with no food or potable water.
- Latest scientific data indicate the sustained winds over Tacloban were "only" 147 MPH, with gusts to 170 MPH, waves as high as 45 feet and 15.75 inches of rain. Hurricane Camille in 1969 reached 190 MPH over Mississippi, but the diameter was half the size of Super Typhoon Haiyan, which reached at least 195 MPH just prior to striking the Philippines.
- Looting has been widespread and order was nonexistent, but there is nothing left to steal.
- I don't believe there is a single structure that is not destroyed or severely damaged.
- We saw bodies everywhere.
- Trees were uprooted for miles around, roads were impassable and power lines were down.
- Total devastation.
