Heard of telomeres? I've been writing about this protein complex for some time and featured it in my SIMPLE SOLUTIONS for Humanity. Telomeres are the red caps at the end of these chromosomes:
The older you get, the shorter they become:
The older you get, the shorter they become:
However, studies are beginning to show that more fruits and vegetables in your diet, minimal fat and sugar consumption, daily exercise, stress relief (like yoga) and omega-3 fatty acids from oily fish can INCREASE the length of your telomeres. Dean Ornish, in collaboration with Nobel Laureate Elizabeth Blackburn, both from the University of California at San Francisco, have been touting wellness for longevity since 2008.
Then again, the older you get, the higher the chances of you suffering from dementia. Nearly half of seniors who need long-term care have symptoms of Alzheimer's. If you have diabetes, chances are that dementia will progress faster. Perhaps worse yet, the entire care-tribe suffers, while the economic toll of our 5 million Alzheimer's patients adds up to $200 billion in the U.S. alone, and will exceed $1 trillion by 2050.
The Obama Administration began to wage war on Alzheimer's, but the process of sequestration crippled funding. For the record, German psychiatrist and neuropathologist, Aloysius Alzheimer (left), is thusly remembered for his early work. He passed away just about a century ago.

Typhoon Usagi (means rabbit in Japanese) veered north of Hong Kong and made landfall 87 miles north at 109 miles per hour over the Chinese city of Shanwai. However, Tropical Storm Pabuk, now at 55 MPH, formed further east of Usagi, and will become a hurricane, move north, currently showing a track reasonably east of Japan. Several islands in the Pacific could be affected.
